Hay raking

A weekend Natural Break , Raking Hay and opening up a ride in North Yorks.
Working on the Austwick and Lawkland Mosses SSSI which is managed by English Nature. The site is a peatland site important for the wild flowers found there. Because the site would be damaged if a tractor was used, the warden cut the Grass with an Allen Sythe and the volunteers turned and raked the cut grass by hand. Once dry this is baled using a hand baler. By doing this the diversity of this rare habitat is preserved.
The other task of the weekend was to open up the ride along the edge of the site. By doing this much more light is brought into the grass area which encourages the growth of the wild flowers and grasses.

Whilst we were in the area the group took the opportunity to take a walk around the local area. One feature of some interest is the local limestone pavements, and the erratic stones found there. These are gritstones that were deposited by the Glaciers when they melted, at the end of the Ice age. Beneth them the softer limestone is erroding away, leaving large bolders perched on small stone pilars.
